Says Nikki: In 2018 I was fortunate to take a boat cruise on Lake Mahinapua, located just south of Hokitika, on the West Coast of the South Island. It is here that the magnificent and still rare White Heron, or Kotuku can be seen fishing amoungst the rushes or purching on top of trees with the majestic Sothern Alps in the background.
The White Heron can be found in India, China, Japan, Australia and New Zealand. In Maori oratory, if you are likened to the Kotuku, this is meant as a great compliment as the Kotuku are rare and beautiful.
