Peonies and bees The peony (Latin name Paeonia) is one of the world’s favourite flowers. The peony is named after Paeon (also spelled Paean), a student of Asclepius, the Greek god of medicine and healing. Asclepius became jealous of his pupil; Zeus saved Paeon from the wrath of Asclepius by turning him into the peony flower. It is inspired by Lux Aeterna from Mozart’s Requiem in D Minor, his last work.
This is what Nikki says about the picture itself: “Early in the summer, I dropped off a commission to someone who has a garden full of peonies. The bees were going nuts; with 6 or 7 in each flower. It’s such a beautiful flower that’s out for just a brief moment each year; and I don’t know of anyone who doesn’t love peonies.”
